Sarzana and Luni

A borderland, a magical place with its fortresses and narrow streets, Sarzana is also one of the capitals of antiques and one of the most established locations for music and home to the famous Festival of the Mind in late August. Situated in the "heart" of Lunigiana, and its main town, Sarzana is an ancient medieval village, which was transformed in the second half of the fifteenth century, according to the canons of Renaissance architecture.

On 6 October 1306, Dante Aligheri appeared before the Sarzana notary Giovanni di Parente di Stupio for the final act of the long peace negotiation between the Malaspina family and the Bishop Count of Luni.

Castles and forts

The city preserves two castles, the Firmafede fortress, of Pisan origin and the Fortress of Sarzanello, an ancient episcopal residence. Today the sixteenth century walled hamlet has almost remained intact, with the walls and four towers and the historic centre developing along the Via Bertoloni and Via Mazzini, between Porta Parma and Porta Romana, in the ancient stretch of the Via Francigena.

The spongata is a Christmas cake typical of Sarzana, but it can also be found in some Tuscan provinces.

Luni, a Roman colony

The Roman amphitheatre, the forum, in the heart of Lunigiana: many elements that make a visit to the ancient Roman city of Luni unique. It was a natural destination frequented by the Etruscans and Ligurians, under the name Selene. This location is magical and, as often happens with wellcared for archaeological sites, it has been the centre of continuous research since the nineteenth century. In the area, in addition to the National Archaeological Museum, you can see the House of Mosaics, the Sanctuary of the Moon Goddess, the Temple of Diana, the House of Frescoes, the Forum and Luni Amphitheatre.
